Tarantulas in Virginia
Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders. Their size and appearance often make them intimidating, but despite the presence of venomous tarantulas in tropical regions, U.S. tarantulas pose little threat. Their venom is weak and rarely harmful to humans. These spiders become more active during their mating season in September and October.
Tarantula Spider Habitat
Tarantulas thrive in warm, dry climates, spending daylight hours in underground burrows and emerging at night to hunt insects nearby. They inhabit well-drained soils in deserts and grasslands. Because they are nocturnal, homeowners may not notice them unless it’s mating season. In the fall, males leave their burrows during the day to search for mates, occasionally wandering into homes if given access.
Tarantula Spider Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
When a tarantula feels threatened, it raises its front legs, exposing its fangs, and shifts its weight onto its hind legs. If this defensive display fails to deter a predator, it may use its legs to flick urticating hairs, and tiny barbed bristles that can cause irritation in humans and even harm small mammals. While tarantulas are not deadly and rarely bite, they may do so if provoked or mishandled. Their bite is typically no worse than a bee sting, though allergic individuals should seek medical attention if they experience a reaction.
