Exceptional Flea Extermination

Nobody wants fleas crawling through their home, but these itchy intruders are tough to eliminate and spread fast. Pets are the most common carriers, however fleas can also latch onto clothing and people. Because they breed rapidly, one flea can snowball into hundreds in no time, without you ever noticing the first one.

If fleas have taken over your home or yard, call Xceptional Wildlife Removal right away. Our team will perform a thorough inspection to figure out exactly what you’re up against.

Flea Appearance

Size: Very small; 1/12 to 1/4 inches (2.12 to 6.35 millimeters)

Color: Can include dark brown, black, brown-black, gray, or dark red-brown. Often semi-translucent.

Common Species:

  • Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
  • Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)
  • Human flea – also known as house flea (Pulex irritans)
  • Oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis)

Flea Behavior and Diet

Fleas are parasitic pests that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Most species have a preferred host, which is how they got their names, but they’re opportunistic feeders and won’t hesitate to bite a human if their preferred meal isn’t available.

Fleas don’t stay latched onto their host like ticks. Instead, they jump on, feed, and jump off again. They use their powerful legs to leap directly onto an animal or person and then crawl to a spot where the skin is thin, often around ankles, necks, or behind ears. Their bites are small but incredibly itchy, and the constant scratching can lead to secondary skin infections, especially for pets.

Flea Life Cycle

Flea Reproduction and Life Cycle

Female fleas require blood to reproduce, and they can consume up to 15 times their body weight in blood each day. After every blood meal, they’re ready to lay eggs, anywhere from a handful to more than two dozen at once. Over the course of their short lives, many fleas lay hundreds of eggs.

Most of these eggs are laid on the host but fall off into bedding, carpeting, or furniture. That means if your pet is infested, the areas where they rest likely harbor eggs as well. Fleas go through four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Depending on the temperature and available food sources, this cycle can take as little as a month, or stretch over 200 days.

Though flea problems tend to spike in summer, indoor infestations can persist all year. If the environment stays warm and humid, fleas will continue reproducing even through the winter months.

Signs of Flea Infestation

Adult fleas are small and move quickly, so you might not notice them right away. Instead, you’ll likely see the signs they leave behind, such as itchy bites or pets scratching more than usual. Flea bites often appear as small, red bumps around areas like ankles, legs, necks, or waistbands.

Flea bites resemble mosquito bites but are usually darker and can leave behind scabs or discoloration. Pets might also lose fur or develop skin irritation from constant scratching. You may even spot flea eggs or flea dirt in pet bedding or carpeting. Flea eggs look like tiny specks of salt or sand, while flea dirt resembles pepper flakes or dark debris.

Treatment and Prevention

Once fleas are in your home, cleaning needs to be your first defense. Vacuum daily, especially in areas where pets spend time, and consider deep cleaning your carpets or rugs with a shampoo or steam cleaner. Dust and mop floors regularly, especially in dark corners.

Humidity control plays a big role in preventing fleas from breeding indoors. Use dehumidifiers and make sure floors dry completely after mopping. Outside, keep your yard free from piles of leaves, branches, or clutter where fleas could hide.

Pets should be bathed using flea-specific shampoos and protected with vet-recommended treatments. Be sure to wash their bedding, plush toys, and blankets thoroughly and often to eliminate any flea eggs or larvae that may be hiding.
