Sac Spiders in Virginia
The sac spider, sometimes called the “yellow sac spider,” is typically pale yellow in color, with some individuals having a slight greenish tint. While they generally avoid humans, they may inadvertently enter homes. Often confused with the brown recluse due to their similar shape, sac spiders lack the brown recluse’s distinctive “fiddle” pattern. They are commonly found in homes, where they prey on various spiders and garden insects.
Sac Spider Habitat
Sac spiders are commonly found outdoors in gardens, beneath bark, rolled leaves, and organic debris. They can also be inadvertently transported into homes on agricultural products like grapes. As cooler weather sets in, these spiders often move indoors in search of warmth. Inside, they create sac-like retreats made of silk at the junctions where walls meet ceilings or other walls, and they are skilled climbers, able to scale smooth surfaces.

Sac spiders are active hunters who use their silk sacs solely for shelter or to protect their eggs. They hunt at night, targeting other insects. These spiders are particularly agile, using their speed to catch prey quickly. Although their bites can resemble those of a brown recluse, they tend to be less severe. The pain from a yellow sac spider bite is generally not medically concerning unless you’re allergic. In some cases, reactions like swelling, slow healing, and ulceration can occur, which may be mistaken for more dangerous bites.
