Bobcats in the SW and SE United States
Bobcats mostly eat rabbits, but may also hunt rodents, reptiles, domestic animals, poultry, and can even take down deer. They are usually solitary unless raising kittens; the kittens will stay with their mother until they are about five months old. The rest of the time, bobcats are very territorial and will protect a few square miles as their own. They are crepuscular, meaning they are mostly active at dawn and dusk – but this may vary depending on the season.
Bobcat Habitat
Bobcats live everywhere in the continental US except Delaware. They are comfortable in a variety of climates, from deserts to forests. They may settle down in rural areas, especially where they can have easy access to livestock like poultry. Bobcats will defend a territory of around 2 to 7 square miles. Territory disputes are rare, with bobcats generally respecting others’ territory markers.
Bobcat Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Bobcats are extremely solitary and are afraid of humans, but may venture close to people if pressured. Habitat destruction may push bobcats closer to civilization, where they can pose a serious danger to pests and some livestock. They will avoid people if at all possible, but may become aggressive if cornered.
If you see a bobcat on your property, do not approach it. They may look like domestic cats, but they are quite dangerous if provoked. Additionally, keep cats and dogs indoors or closely supervised.
