Velvety Tree Ants in Virginia
The velvety tree ant is named after its smooth, velvety, dark abdomen. These ants are often called “tree ants” because they commonly nest in trees. If crushed or disturbed, they release an unpleasant odor. Their similar appearance and association with wood lead to confusion with carpenter ants, but unlike carpenter ants, velvety tree ants leave behind finer frass when constructing their nests.
Velvety Tree Ant Habitat
Velvety tree ants naturally nest in the crooks and hollows of trees or beneath stones. They are commonly found in oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, and pines. In buildings, their nests resemble those of carpenter ants, but the material they excavate has a finer texture. Like carpenter ants, they carve tunnels and nests in wood, though they do not consume it. As omnivores, they feed on various substances, from protein to sugary foods.
Velvety Tree Ants Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Known for their aggressiveness, velvety tree ants will attack intruders and spray them with secretions that resemble those of odorous house ants. Homeowners often complain about the strong odors associated with these ants. They are avid wood chewers, particularly attracted to insulation, where frass or wood shavings can often be found. These ants also build nests inside wall voids within homes.
Should you suspect a velvety tree ant infestation, contacting a professional ant exterminator is highly recommended.
