Harvester Ants in Virginia
Harvester ants, often called “red ants,” are well-known for collecting seeds and delivering painful stings. These ants primarily feed on grass seeds, which make up most of their diet. Easily identifiable by their large size, they create noticeable mounds in open grasslands and deserts around Virginia. With powerful jaws, they grind seeds and store them in designated ‘granaries’ within their nests. These ants also contribute to soil health by dispersing seeds, although their presence can result in soil erosion. While they are valuable seed gatherers, their painful sting and foraging habits can harm lawns and vegetation.
Harvester Ant Habitat
Harvester ant nests are often found in sandy, exposed soil, with each nest having up to 10 entrances. These mounds are moderate to large in size and can be spotted in arid grasslands, lawns, and playgrounds. The ants create wide, circular clearings by stripping vegetation, which can lead to soil erosion. Although they prefer the outdoors and generally don’t invade buildings, they are known to build nests in lawns and gardens near homes, often damaging plants. Reproduction occurs through swarming, typically between June and October, and is most common in the afternoon after rain.
Harvester Ant Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
While they don’t typically invade homes, harvester ants can be troublesome on lawns and playgrounds, stinging anyone who comes too close. Famous for their painful sting, these ants differ from others by leaving their stinger behind in the wound. They are known to attack humans and small animals, with some stings resulting in anaphylactic reactions. Their aggressive behavior and tendency to swarm in large numbers make them even more dangerous during their mating season.
