Ghost Ants in Virginia
Ghost ants, native to tropical and subtropical areas, are a frequent nuisance in homes across Virginia. They adapt well to temperate climates, often settling inside buildings. Colonies can grow large, with multiple queens supporting their expansion. These tiny ants are easy to recognize by their dark heads, pale bodies, and unique coconut-like odor when crushed. They are often seen trailing along kitchen counters, bathroom sinks, and floors.
Ghost Ant Habitat
Ghost ants seek out moist habitats, making nests in soil, decomposing wood, beneath bark, in leaf litter, and within plant cavities. Indoors, they settle in potted plants, bread boxes, shower curtain rods, behind baseboards, and between cabinets. They commonly enter homes through tiny cracks around doors, windows, and soffits. Outdoors, their nests are often found near foundations, porches, trees, and shrubs, as well as inside the hollow frames of pool enclosures. They can also invade structures by moving through nearby vegetation.
Ghost Ant Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Ghost ants are not aggressive and do not sting, though they may bite if disturbed. They are primarily found in kitchens but can spread to other areas of the home, often forming trails along carpet edges. They favor sweets but will also consume grease and feed on honeydew-producing insects. Their need for moisture leads them to bathrooms, where they gather around sinks, tubs, and toilets.
If you suspect an infestation, consulting a licensed exterminator is the most effective solution.
