Oriental Cockroaches in Virginia

Often called the “black beetle” or “water bug,” the oriental cockroach is a common household pest in the northwest, midwest, and southern U.S. It thrives in damp, shaded outdoor areas and prefers basements, crawl spaces, and cellars indoors. These roaches can climb water pipes and garbage chutes to reach the upper floors of apartment buildings. Feeding on filth and decaying organic matter, they are especially drawn to garbage and discarded tin cans.

Oriental Cockroach Habitat

Often found outdoors in damp, shaded areas near the ground, oriental cockroaches prefer to hide under trash cans and other debris. Cooler temperatures may drive them indoors, although they can withstand some cold. They typically enter homes through cracks under doors, garage openings, vents, or even in grocery packaging. Once inside, they favor lower floors and are slower-moving compared to other types of cockroaches.

Oriental Cockroach Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

While they won’t physically damage a home, oriental cockroaches are a major health threat. Carrying up to 33 types of bacteria, including E. Coli and Salmonella, they contaminate food and surfaces as they scavenge. Their presence can also attract other pests, such as ants and rodents, which further contribute to unsanitary conditions. Their feces and shed skin can also cause allergic reactions and aggravate asthma, making infestation a serious issue.

If you have an oriental cockroach infestation, reach out to a professional exterminator for effective treatment.
