Woodpeckers in Virginia
Woodpeckers are widespread across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Some species damage wooden structures by pecking or drilling holes, typically for nesting or to feed on insects within the wood. The drumming sound, often heard in spring, is a territorial display by males and can be a significant annoyance, occurring multiple times a day.
Woodpecker Habitat
Woodpeckers can be found in forests, backyards, and other habitats with available trees. As night approaches, they search for roosting cavities, either abandoned holes or ones they’ve dug for this purpose. They begin excavating nesting holes at the start of the breeding season, typically in late April and May. These birds are highly selective in their choice of sites, with wooden houses in suburban and rural areas being most vulnerable to damage.
Woodpecker Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Damage from woodpeckers to wooden structures and trees can occur in several ways, such as drilling holes in siding, fascia boards, or window frames. Their damage to utility poles can be severe, leading to the need for replacement. Woodpeckers also peck at wood to remove insects, especially carpenter bee larvae and pupae. These birds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act as migratory, nongame species.
Always consult licensed bird control specialists for any woodpecker-related concerns.
